Commissioning Engineer - Senior

Our client are looking for an experienced Commissioning Engineer to join their dynamic, cross-functional team, focused on the successful execution of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects. The Commissioning Engineer will be responsible for the testing, commissioning, and oversight of BESS projects from the Pre-Commissioning phase through to Substantial Completion. This role plays a crucial part in ensuring the efficient operation and successful deployment of cutting-edge battery storage technologies. The position requires spending over 75% of your time at the project site to manage commissioning activities on the ground.


Key Responsibilities

Project Planning (Remote)

·       Participate in meetings with owners, operations and maintenance teams, design, and construction personnel to align on project goals and schedules, ensuring seamless coordination of commissioning activities.

·       Collaborate with the Commissioning Manager to develop commissioning plans, specifications, checklists, and functional test documentation, adhering to client and company standards.

·       Review project documents and preliminary designs to identify potential scope gaps and responsibilities to ensure project success.

·       Provide insights based on a deep understanding of engineering, construction, and permitting concepts for effective project delivery.

 Project Commissioning (On-Site)

·       Lead the execution of commissioning activities, managing scope, stakeholders, and schedules to ensure smooth and timely progress.

·       Communicate effectively with both internal teams (commissioning manager, project manager, construction manager) and external stakeholders (utilities, AHJs, contractors, end customers) to ensure alignment throughout the project.

·       Oversee equipment suppliers, conducting daily plan of day (POD) meetings to track progress and align on work schedules.

·       Review Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) procedures and reports to ensure compliance with specifications and quality standards.

·       Conduct site visits to align on commissioning plans, schedules, and checklists, ensuring the efficient execution of all commissioning activities and performance testing.

·       Inspect construction work and assist in resolving any technical issues related to installation and commissioning.

·       Propose improvements to the commissioning execution plan or processes based on insights and lessons learned during the project.

·       Support the coordination and training of operation and maintenance personnel to maintain systems post-commissioning and perform ongoing commissioning as part of a continuous improvement program.

 Other Responsibilities

·       Build and maintain key relationships with vendors, suppliers, and contractors across the energy storage industry to foster collaboration and innovation.

·       Contribute to value-engineering and process improvement efforts by sharing project-specific lessons learned and best practices.


Qualifications and Experience

·       BS in Engineering or equivalent practical experience in the Energy Storage or Renewable Energy sector.

·       5-10 years of relevant experience in commissioning or systems engineering within Energy Storage integrators or EPC contractors.

·       Direct experience working with Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), medium voltage stations, and related systems.

·       Proficient in specification, technical bid analysis, and procurement of key equipment such as inverters, transformers, and switchgear.

·       Strong knowledge of SCADA systems and associated communication protocols.

·       Deep understanding of the commissioning and testing processes for Energy Storage projects.

·       Practical, hands-on experience in system engineering with a solid understanding of regulatory standards and local code compliance.

·       Proactive, results-driven professional with the ability to set and achieve measurable goals, with a strong can-do attitude.

·       Excellent time management skills, able to prioritize multiple projects and manage diverse issues and objectives.

·       Strong interpersonal skills, capable of building relationships with internal teams, clients, suppliers, and external stakeholders.

·       Demonstrated ability to make sound decisions under pressure, showcasing independent thinking, initiative, and creativity.

·       Ability to work flexible hours (including evenings and weekends) and travel to project sites as required.
