DOGGER BANK A COMPLETES INTER-ARRAY CABLE INSTALLATION

Industry News

Source - reNews - Dogger Bank A wraps up array cables works

Over 328 kilometers of 66kV inter-array cables have been successfully installed at the Dogger Bank A offshore wind farm, thanks to the efforts of delivery partners.

DEME Offshore’s Viking Neptun was responsible for laying the cables, while DEME Offshore’s Living Stone completed the burial operations. This achievement signifies the completion of all inter-array cables for the first phase of the wind farm, Dogger Bank A, which began generating electricity in October 2023.

The network comprises 95 cables of varying lengths up to 8.6 miles, linking the 95 Haliade-X 13MW turbines at Dogger Bank A to the offshore convertor station. From this point, the electricity is converted into direct current and transmitted to the onshore convertor station via an innovative HVDC system.

This complex engineering feat follows extensive preparatory work, including underwater surveys to ensure the cable laying route was free of obstacles.

The 66kV inter-array cables were produced by Hellenic Cables under a contract with DEME Offshore, the tier one contractor for the project. Hellenic Cables and DEME Offshore are also tasked with the manufacture and installation of cables for the Dogger Bank B and C phases, with the first cable for Dogger Bank B anticipated to be installed in autumn 2024.

Alan Evans, Marine Package Manager for Dogger Bank Wind Farm, commented: “This milestone marks a significant step forward in our marine operations for Dogger Bank A and reflects the excellent teamwork of all involved. With a total of 277 cables to be installed, this is the largest inter-array cable installation project in offshore wind to date. The successful completion of this phase is a testament to the entire team’s dedication.”

Geert Linthout, Project Director at DEME Offshore, added: “The close collaboration between the teams at Dogger Bank and DEME Offshore has been key to reaching this major milestone. The effective use of both the Living Stone and the newly introduced Viking Neptun cable installation vessels has been outstanding. This achievement lays a strong foundation for the upcoming phases of Dogger Bank B and C. We look forward to continuing our successful partnership on these next stages.
