IT'S EARTH DAY!
LSP NewsWhat is it?
Earth Day is an annual event celebrated around the world on April 22 to demonstrate support for ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION. Fifty years ago, the world realised that something would need to be done to protect the planet, it now includes events in more than 193 countries.
The theme for this earth day is Restore Our Earth.
Whats happened so far?
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is an international framework for climate action adopted in 1992.
The Kyoto Protocol was adopted in 1997 and brought into force in 2005.
The Paris Agreement was signed on Earth Day in 2015.
What action has the treaties bought?
These international treaties aim to keep the overall increase in global temperatures below 2 degrees Celsius, with the hope of limiting it to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Scientists believe that these are the largest increases in global temperature that we could experience without causing catastrophic change to the Earth’s climate.
Each country commits to nationally determined contributions (NDCs), which detail how much it will cut its greenhouse gas emissions by and by when. A critical part of NDCs is that they give each country flexibility to tailor climate action plans to fit its own unique circumstances. So for some countries this means focusing primarily on things like land use or fighting deforestation. For others this means focusing on cutting back on coal and transitioning to clean, renewable electricity generation, globally, the electricity and heat production sector emit the largest percentage of greenhouse gas emissions at 25%.
Clean, renewable electricity generation
Onshore Wind, Offshore Wind, Floating Wind, Solar PV, Floating Solar PV, Waste to Energy, Green Hydrogen, Energy Storage are just the start of innovations in renewable energy. Looking into the future we will likely be living in smart cities driving electric cars whilst carrying our own coffee cups and cutlery and never dreaming of buying single use plastics.
What changes are we seeing in the world from climate change?
The ice sheets are declining, glaciers are in retreat and our oceans are more acidic than ever
Surface temperatures are setting new heat records each year
We are experiencing more extreme weather like droughts, heat waves, and hurricanes
Global sea levels are rising at an alarmingly fast rate — 17 centimetres (6.7 inches) in the last century alone.
World biodiversity has declined alarmingly in half a century: more than 25,000 species, almost a third of those known, are in danger of disappearing.
What are others doing?
Education for our children is a key change required in battling climate change. The not for profit group earthday.org have written an open letter to the UNFCC lobbying for commitments to educate children on the environment and climate issues to be included in The Paris Agreement. Meanwhile initiatives like offshore wind 4 kids recently set up by William Beucklaers is ideal:
“The primary goal of OffshoreWind4Kids is to teach kids about engineering, technology and renewable energy. We use a hands-on approach where children can play with small scale offshore wind turbines, illustrating various aspects of offshore wind energy. We want to support women in engineering by encouraging girls to use the wind turbine kits and we aim to teach as many girls as boys about offshore wind. Secondary goals are to stimulate innovation and to spread awareness of offshore wind to the general public.”
What LSP Renewables are pledging to do for the following year to restore our earth:
Continue to support our Clients with the highly skilled talent solutions they need to be able to operate their projects from inception to completion.
Support Offshore Wind 4 Kids and their investment in educating young people in offshore wind.
Partner with Women In Engineering to encourage women within the engineering sector to increase the talent pool within the renewable sector
Work with Ecologi to continue planting more trees and support more renewable projects around the globe.
Work with groups within our local area to help our local communities to be greener and cleaner.
Encouraging our staff to download the Global Earth Challenge app to use in their daily lives (see more below)
Ten things you can do for earth day and beyond!
- Reduce, reuse, recycle.
- Reduce your meat, dairy & fish consumption.
- Volunteer.
- Educate yourself & those around you.
- Conserve water
- Shop wisely by only buying the food & clothing that you need.
- Use long lasting light bulbs.
- Plant a tree.
- Bike/walk more. This is a win-win as it will help fitness and mental health too!
- Get involved with the Global Earth Challenge - This is a brilliant initiative from earthday.org, simply download the app, take pictures and record information on air quality, plastic pollution and more. The data will then be available on a public map and will be used as an open data source for projects all over the world. - Global Earth Challenge (earthday.org)
