CROWN LAUNCHES SECOND PHASE OF CELTIC SEA LEASING
Industry NewsCommencing on August 8, this phase, known as Invitation to Tender Stage 1 (ITT Stage 1), invites bidders to present their proposals for new wind farm projects. This stage is part of a broader leasing process aimed at establishing floating wind farms in three designated Project Development Areas (PDAs) within the Celtic Sea.
The final phase of this process will involve an auction where offshore wind developers will vie for the rights to these three PDAs, expected to take place in the first half of 2025. Agreements for Lease are anticipated to be finalized by the summer of 2025.
Bidders are encouraged to propose ambitious plans that could include components related to skills training, apprenticeship opportunities, community impact, sustainable procurement, and ecological restoration, according to The Crown Estate.
Energy Security and Net Zero Secretary Ed Miliband highlighted the significant potential of this leasing round.
“Already, The Crown Estate has formed an exciting new partnership with Great British Energy, and this latest leasing round offers even more opportunities to deliver these projects," Energy Security and Net Zero Secretary Ed Miliband said.
“This, combined with over £1.5 billion we’re offering through the next Contracts for Difference auction, will give developers the confidence to deliver here – and help us reach clean power by 2030.”
First Minister of Wales Eluned Morgan also emphasized the regional benefits, noting, “There are huge opportunities to be seized all along Wales’ coast and, working in partnership with Great British Energy, we are pleased that The Crown Estate will be able to take a more active role on social value and local supply chains to help deliver something truly transformative,"
This development follows the completion of the initial Pre-Qualification Questionnaire (PQQ) phase in June 2024, which saw a robust interest from offshore wind developers. The Crown Estate has indicated that a strong group of Prequalified Bidders, who have met the necessary criteria, is now set to advance to the next stage.
