The Rui Li 1 floating wind farm, with a capacity of 180MW, will be part of Taiwan’s first Floating Wind Demonstration and is set to premiere at Energy Taiwan 2024 this October. This project is a collaboration between IX Renewables, Hexicon, and GF Corporation.

Earlier this year, the project, situated 21 kilometers off the coast of Hsinchu County, successfully cleared the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and completed the initial phase of its preliminary review, according to the development team.

The wind farm, which could consist of 12 floating turbines with a combined capacity of 180MW, will be located in waters between 75 and 95 meters deep. The facility has the potential to generate 833GWh annually, enough electricity to supply around 205,000 households.

Speaking about the project, Taiwan representative Lars Hummel highlighted Taiwan's strategic importance for floating offshore wind due to its deepwater potential in the Taiwan Strait. He stated, “The Rui Li 1 Project is well-positioned to address the complex challenges associated with floating wind projects with robust engineering capabilities and global insights, while maintaining a strong local presence to navigate both the technical and market-specific challenges.

“As Taiwan embarks on a new phase of offshore wind development, we are excited to participate in the upcoming floating wind demonstration to support the energy transition in Taiwan with the joint effort from our partners, presenting the advancing floating wind innovation and technology as well as world-class expertise, and to cultivate and explore a pioneering floating wind sector in Taiwan.”
