US WINDS SECURES KEY PERMITS TO POWER DELAWARE WITH CLEAN ENERGY
Industry NewsSource - reNews - Delaware gives onshore nod for US Wind
US Wind has achieved a significant milestone in its Maryland Offshore Wind project with the approval of key state permits to connect clean offshore wind energy to the regional grid in Sussex County, Delaware. The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) has granted final approval for three critical permits: the Subaqueous Lands Permit, the Wetlands Permit, and the Beach Preservation Coastal Construction Permit.
These permits mark a major step forward in US Wind’s efforts to advance its onshore development work. Reflecting on the accomplishment, US Wind CEO Jeff Grybowski shared: “Securing these approvals represents a vital milestone for our project. After an extensive, science-driven evaluation by DNREC’s experts and valuable input from the public, we are thrilled to move closer to delivering substantial amounts of clean energy to the region.”
Grybowski emphasized the broader impact of the project, noting: “Offshore wind will provide significant benefits to Delaware residents—lowering electricity costs, addressing the urgent need for additional power, and enhancing air quality across the state—all while creating high-quality local jobs. This project is set to deliver long-term value for Delaware communities.”
With DNREC’s approval, US Wind can now move forward with plans to responsibly land its power cables beneath 3R’s Beach parking lot in Delaware Seashore State Park. From there, the cables will be routed under the Indian River Bay, ultimately connecting to the regional electrical grid at Delmarva Power and Light’s Indian River substation in Dagsboro, Delaware.
This progress at the state level comes on the heels of a major federal breakthrough for US Wind. Just last week, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) granted its final approval of the project’s Construction and Operations Plan (COP), completing the federal permitting process. Together, these advancements position US Wind to drive forward its mission of delivering clean, reliable, and affordable energy to the region while supporting a sustainable future for Delaware and beyond.
