SSE AND GILKES ENERGY PLAN FOR PUMPED STORAGE HYDRO PROJECT!

A Section 36 has been submitted by SSE and Gilkes Energy for a proposed joint venture pumped storage hydro (PSH) in the Scottish Highlands.

The joint venture will be located at the western end of Glengarry, around 25KM west of Invergarry, adjoining SSE Renewables’ Loch Quoich reservoir.

Subject to securing planning consent, Fearna PSH will have an installed capacity of 1.8GW with a stored capacity of up to 36GWh, providing 20 hours of storage, making it the largest scheme of its type in the UK if delivered.

Fearna could significantly boost employment and stimulate the local economy, supporting approximately 500 jobs throughout its estimated seven-year construction period. Project plans outline the development of tunnels and the construction of a new power station, contributing to long-term infrastructure growth.

Fraser Allison, Project Director of the Fearna PSH Project, said: "We are pleased to have submitted a Section 365 planning consent application to Scottish Ministers for Fearna. This exciting long duration electricity storage project could be the largest in the UK for both installed capacity and stored energy. We are looking forward to continued engagement with stakeholders, supply chain partners and the local community as the planning process moves forward."

If you are interested in further information surrounding Fearna, or opportunities across the energy storage sector, please reach out to our team here.
